Księgarnia Lello & Irmão w Porto

[:en]If you like books (or if you don’t, it doesn’t matter), you should visit Lello & Irmão bookstore, located on Rua das Carmelitas 144. Opened in 1906, still runs and enchants visitors with its Art Nouveau and Gothic Revival interior. The spiral, wooden stairs in the center of the bookstore make a great impression. There is also a small café on the first floor. There is also one nice story about the library 😉

Picturesque ceilings and walls, reliefs or the big vitrage have a great impact on the atmosphere in the bookstore. Unfortunately, this can be ruined by tourists occupying every free space. They take photos of everything and it’s sometimes really hard to move. You can’t even use the stairs! I recommend visiting the bookstore right after the opening or before closing, otherwise you will left the place irritated. In August 2015 the entrance fee of 3€ was introduced and if you decide to buy a book, they will give you the money back for the ticket.

What made the Lello bookstore so popular, was probably J. K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter books. She taught English in Porto and visited the place regularly, as she lived nearby. Is it true that the bookstore was an inspiration to describe magical Hogwart’s? Highly possible!

[:pl]Jeżeli lubicie książki (lub nie, to bez znaczenia), warto odwiedzić księgarnię Lello & Irmão, mieszczącą się przy Rua das Carmelitas 144. Otwarta w 1906 roku, wciąż funkcjonuje i zachwyca swoim wnętrzem w stylu secesyjnym i neogotyckim. Szczególne wrażenie robią kręte, drewniane schody, prowadzące na piętro, gdzie znajduje się również niewielka kawiarnia. Księgarnia kryje też jedną ciekawą informację 🙂

Bogato zdobione sufity i ściany, płaskorzeźby czy duży witraż na suficie wpływają na niesamowitą atmosferę księgarni. Psują ją niestety setki turystów zajmujących każdą możliwą wolną przestrzeń. Wszyscy robią zdjęcia, zwłaszcza na krętych schodach, przez co czasem nie można na nie wejść lub z nich zejść, a irytacja sięga zenitu. Polecam wizytę tuż po otwarciu księgarni lub przed samym jej zamknięciem – moja nauczka na przyszłość. Warto wspomnieć, że od sierpnia 2015 wstęp do księgarni kosztuje 3 euro, gdy zdecydujemy się jednak kupić książkę – opłata jest zwracana (otrzymuje się rabat na książkę o takiej wysokości).

Na ogromną popularność księgarni Lello wpływ miała również autorka serii książek o Harrym Potterze, J. K. Rowling. Pisarka uczyła w Porto języka angielskiego i ponoć często odwiedzała to miejsce. Ile prawdy jest w tym, że księgarnia posłużyła jej za inspirację do opisania Hogwartu, nie wiadomo, wydaje się to jednak całkiem prawdopodobne.
